Original US Army 4th Infantry Division Patch | Subdued Twill | Vietnam Era
Description
The four ivy leaves that fought through the Central Highlands.
-
Unit History: Deploying to Vietnam in 1966, the 4th Infantry Division saw heavy combat primarily in the rugged Central Highlands near the Cambodian border. They were one of the principal US fighting forces of the war.
-
The "Ivy" Design: The four leaves represent the word "Ivy," which is a phonetic play on the Roman numeral "IV" (four).
-
Early Manufacturing (Twill & Cut Edge): Unlike later fully-embroidered patches, this early subdued version uses an exposed OD green twill fabric base with only the black design embroidered onto it. The reverse clearly shows the exposed fabric and period-correct bobbin thread. The raw cut edge dates this piece firmly to the 1966-1968 production era.
