Experimental Prototype US Army Natick Tactical Knee Pads | Somalia 1993 Task Force Ranger | M81 Woodland | NOS
Description
Up for sale is one of the most elusive artifacts of early-1990s U.S. Special Operations history—genuine Experimental Prototype Natick Tactical Soft Knee Pads in M81 Woodland camouflage. Developed in the early 1990s by the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NRDEC) prior to the adoption of commercial hard-shell pads, these contoured low-profile knee pads were produced in a tiny experimental batch for field evaluation by elite USSOCOM units.
These exact Natick laboratory prototypes were combat-tested on the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia (1992–1993) during Operation Restore Hope and Operation Gothic Serpent (Battle of Mogadishu / Black Hawk Down). As proven by the period reference photograph in front of an up-armored HMMWV, special operations personnel dressed in 3-Color Desert (DCU) uniforms and Ranger Body Armor (RBA) famously wore these exact M81 Woodland Natick prototypes in theater.
Key Features & Collector Details:
- True Natick R&D Prototype Construction: Devoid of standard mass-production contract labels (as is typical for sterile Natick laboratory test items), the pads feature a darted M81 Woodland 1000D Cordura outer shell, an OD Green nylon inner face, and dense closed-cell impact foam padding.
- Early 1990s ITW Nexus & Fastex Hardware: Secured via dual OD green webbing straps with elastic expansion sections. Equipped with genuine early-production ITW NEXUS SCSR-3/4" NX-3 side-release buckles and tri-glide adjusters stamped FASTEX DES PLAINES IL. 60016—unmistakable hallmarks of late-1980s to early-1990s U.S. military trials production.
- Museum-Grade NOS Condition: Because experimental trials gear was heavily abused during urban combat (MOUT / CQB), virtually every pair from this small test batch was destroyed in service. This pair has miraculously survived in pristine NOS (New Old Stock / Unissued) condition—the Cordura is factory-stiff, the elastic remains tight, and the polymer hardware shows zero wear.
- True U.S. Special Operations "unobtainium" and the ultimate centerpiece for any museum-grade 1993 Somalia / Task Force Ranger / Black Hawk Down collection!
