Original 82nd Airborne Division Patch (All American) | Subdued | Cut-Edge
Description
The patch worn by the men who helped crush the Tet Offensive.
-
Unit History: The 82nd Airborne Division acts as America's primary rapid response force. In early 1968, in response to the surprise Tet Offensive, the division's 3rd Brigade ("Golden Brigade") was hastily deployed to Vietnam. They fought fiercely for nearly two years, securing critical areas around Hué and Saigon.
-
Design: The patch consists of a square backing with a central circle containing the letters "AA", standing for "All American" (a WWI-era nod to the unit's original members hailing from all 48 states). The matching "AIRBORNE" tab completes the set. This subdued coloring was necessary for camouflage in the jungle.
-
Cut-Edge Dating: This patch is a textbook example of authentic Vietnam War manufacturing. It features a period-correct "cut-edge" rather than a modern, thick merrowed border. The reverse reveals exposed white bobbin threads behind the black embroidery and entirely lacks any plastic or glue backing—a definitive hallmark of authentic 1960s US production.
