The evolution of US combat rations in one pristine package.

  • History of the "Lurp": The Food Packet, Long Range Patrol was specifically designed during the Vietnam War for special operations forces (Special Forces, LRRPs, Rangers) conducting extended missions deep in the jungle. They needed a lightweight, compact, and high-calorie food source that could withstand harsh environments.

  • This Specific Variant (Late Generation): Unlike the early "dry Lurps" (which required boiling water to rehydrate the freeze-dried main meal), this late-type dark brown package (often called a "wet Lurp") contained a meal that did not need rehydration. This significant advancement in food technology paved the way for the modern MRE.

  • Menu No. 4: This ration is Menu No. 4, clearly labeled as Beef with Rice. It was manufactured by Cadillac Products, Inc. in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
