Original 1st Cavalry Division Patch (Vietnam) | Subdued | Cut-Edge
Description
The symbol of helicopter warfare in the jungles of Vietnam.
-
Unit History: The 1st Cavalry Division made history in Vietnam as the first fully airmobile division, flying into combat on UH-1 Huey helicopters. They fought in legendary engagements like the Battle of Ia Drang Valley. The massive size of their shoulder patch made them instantly recognizable.
-
Design: The patch is shaped like a Norman shield. The black horse's head and diagonal stripe pay homage to the unit's 19th-century horseback origins. This subdued version replaced the bright yellow/black color scheme to provide better camouflage in the field.
-
Cut-Edge Dating: This patch is a textbook example of Vietnam War manufacturing. It features a period-correct "cut-edge" rather than a modern merrowed border. The reverse reveals exposed white bobbin threads behind the black embroidery and lacks any plastic or glue backing—hallmarks of authentic US-made production from the era.
