A definitive piece of early WWII field gear, heavily associated with the US Marines in the Pacific Theater. This is the M1942 Porcelain Enamel Steel Canteen.

  • Background: Introduced to save aluminum for aircraft production, these canteens were heavy and prone to chipping, making them a short-lived production run essentially limited to 1942.

  • Markings: This example features the maker mark stamped directly into the steel, visible where the enamel has chipped away: "U.S. / U.S.S. CO. / 1942".

  • Condition: Vintage / Combat Used. The canteen shows typical chipping to the black enamel finish, exposing the steel underneath. This "salty" look is highly desired for displays representing the harsh conditions of Guadalcanal. Includes the correct flat-top plastic cap.
