A classic piece of early WWII "ersatz" gear used heavily by the Marines in the Pacific Theater. This is the M1942 Black Enamel Steel Canteen.

  • Background: Introduced in 1942 to save aluminum for aircraft production, these porcelain-enamel canteens were heavy and prone to chipping, making them a short-lived but historically significant variant.

  • Condition: The canteen shows honest field wear. There is visible chipping to the black enamel on the shoulders and body, exposing the steel underneath. This "salty" look is highly desired by collectors seeking combat-used items rather than warehouse surplus. Cap is the correct flat-top plastic type.

  • The Cover: The canvas cover features a hand-stenciled Unit/Rack Number "591", adding great character. It is the type without the bottom drain grommet.
