The holy grail for restorers and collectors of German combat helmets! Up for sale is an absolutely pristine, unissued leather chinstrap from the very end of WWII. Detailed research confirms the manufacturer as C. Otto Gehrckens from Pinneberg. The specific "RFNr." marking allows us to date this piece with extreme precision to the narrow window between late 1944 and May 1945. This is a flawless New Old Stock (NOS) item featuring late-war steel hardware, making it the perfect finishing touch for a late-war Quist M40 or depot-assembled M42 helmet.

A physical piece of the collapsing German war machine, preserved in perfect condition.

  • Maker & Location: The nine-digit code 0/0494/0008 stamped on the pointed tip definitively identifies the maker as C. Otto Gehrckens, Leder- und Riemenwerke, located in Pinneberg, Schleswig-Holstein. The prefix "0" confirms the factory belonged to the massive industrial sector (Reichsgruppe Industrie).

  • Exact Dating: The "RFNr." (Reichsfabriknummer) prefix officially replaced the more common "RBNr." at the very end of 1944. Therefore, this specific chinstrap was undeniably produced during the final collapse of the Third Reich, between late 1944 and the spring of 1945.

  • Construction & Materials: This piece shows textbook late-war manufacturing traits. It features the standard 13 adjustment holes. Crucially, the early-war aluminum hardware was replaced with painted steel (for both the buckle and the stud) due to a critical shortage of non-ferrous metals, which were diverted to Luftwaffe aircraft production.

  • Unissued Condition (NOS): This chinstrap never saw frontline combat. Due to the complete destruction of the German railway and logistics networks by Allied bombing, massive amounts of gear produced in northern Germany remained trapped in supply depots, where they were eventually captured by Allied forces in pristine condition.
