Original 173rd Airborne Brigade Patch (Sky Soldiers) | Subdued | Cut-Edge
Description
The first major US Army ground combat unit deployed to Vietnam.
-
Unit History: The 173rd Airborne Brigade ("Sky Soldiers") holds a significant place in history as the first major US Army ground combat formation deployed to Vietnam in the spring of 1965. They also conducted the only major combat parachute assault of the entire Vietnam War during Operation Junction City in 1967.
-
Design: The patch consists of a shield featuring a vertical sword attached to a wing, symbolizing airborne readiness and combat power. The matching "AIRBORNE" tab completes the set. This subdued coloring was necessary for tactical camouflage.
-
Cut-Edge Dating: This patch is a textbook example of authentic Vietnam War manufacturing. It features a period-correct "cut-edge" rather than a modern, thick merrowed border. The reverse reveals exposed white bobbin threads behind the black embroidery and completely lacks any plastic or glue backing—a definitive hallmark of authentic 1960s US production.
